7 card stud poker is a variation of the stud poker game; it’s played by a minimum of two players and a maximum of eight. The game is extremely popular within casinos; however its popularity has recently been overshadowed by the Texas Hold’Em game which has seen an increase in its popularity.
Play begins to the left of the dealer and to get the game started, the dealer will shuffle and cut one deck of cards. The card that is on top of the deck will always be discarded which is referred to as the “burn” card. Before the starting hand is dealt, players will place their bets and this can be known as the “ante”. The dealer will deal the first card face down, always starting with the player in the seat one position, moving clockwise around the table to all remaining players. The second card is also dealt face down; the third card is then dealt face up and is known as the “door card”. All cards that are dealt face up will remain that way throughout the game for all players to view.
Players must then decide what they are going to do with their starting hand. If a player is not happy with their starting hand, they can fold and wait until play begins on the next game to join. For the players that remain in the game, they must check their door cards and the player with the lowest door cards are able to place the first bet. Some casinos will impose a minimum bet that players will have to adhere to. Players continue to place their bets going clockwise around the table. The purpose of the bring-in bet is to determine the first position for the starting hand. When bets are being placed, calling and raising on each bet can be done at this point also.
Play then continues with the dealer burning the top card of the deck before going on to deal the next round of cards to the players that are still in the game. Players are then dealt a fourth card face up which is known as “fourth street”. At this point the player with the highest hand can place their bet and they become the player in the top position at the table. At this stage of the game the minimum amount of bet has usually increased and this will vary from casinos. Play resumes from the player with the highest showing hand and the order of calling, raising or folding will be done from this player in a clockwise position.
For players that are still in play after the fourth street game, for play to continue, the dealer will burn another top deck card before dealing the fifth card face up known as “fifth street”. This round works exactly the same as the fourth street round except the bet minimum will have increased again. For the remaining players, the dealer will burn another card before dealing the sixth card face up known as “sixth street”. Again, this round is exactly the same as fifth street and the bet minimum usually stays the same.
If at this point, there are any players remaining, they are dealt one last card after the dealer has burned the top card from the deck. The seventh card is known as the “river”. This card is dealt face down and can only be looked at by the player themselves. The player with the highest hand takes over first position and they as before start the betting. Once all betting has finished, remaining players will turn over their face down cards to see who has the best hand at the table. The player with the winning hand wins the money accumulated at the table through each round of betting.
