History of Omaha Poker

While the popular gambling game of Poker has been around for centuries, the variations of the game have only developed at different times, as a response to the changing desires of the players.  Today, it is probably true to say that Omaha Poker is one of the – if not the – most popular of the Poker variations and is played in hundreds of casinos both on and off line, throughout the world. It is also a popular poker game to play in tournaments.  It may initially seem that Texas Hold’em is the poker tournament game, but even so, Omaha Poker holds its own when it comes to popularity among poker players too and it does share a lot in common with its arch rival Texas Hold’em.  With Omaha Poker, players get to form a winning combination from  9 individual (as opposed to 2) cards, plus the 5 community cards.

Unfortunately, not all that much is known about the history of Omaha Poker (there are some ideas floating around, but nothing solid).  There are some things that are known however, like the fact that the game was not invented in Omaha!  It’s also quite hard to discuss the history of Omaha Poker since the game has not been around for so long to have yet developed a history per se to speak of.  There just hasn’t been all that much written about Omaha poker over the years, because, well, there haven’t been that many years that it’s been around!

There have been similar types of games that have been played before Omaha poker emerged.  Such games could be said to have been a part of the history of Omaha Poker.  But they were under different names, so they are not talked about much.  It was games whereby players were dealt 4 personal cards (like in today’s version of Omaha poker) and some games whereby players got 5 cards.  When playing the 5 card version of Omaha poker, only 8 players could partake.  But usually with Omaha and other poker versions, 9 or 10 players participate.

What we do know of the limited history of Omaha Poker is that it first came to a Las Vegas casino only in 1982 and was instantly popular amongst players.  It didn’t take long for Omaha poker to become a mainstay of casino life and tournament playing.  People liked the game as there was a lot of money to be made and it wasn’t such a difficult game to follow.  There is also a tremendous amount of action in Omaha Poker, again adding to its popularity.

One could say that the history of Omaha Poker emerged from Texas Hold’em poker.  There were a few versions to this game, one of which – the one in which players had to use both personal cards along with 3 of the 5 community cards to form a winning combination was referred to as “Omaha” so when 4 card Hold’em emerged in Las Vegas it became known as Omaha as the game needed all players to use 2 of his own cards with 3 of the communal ones to form a winning hand.  But that still does  not shed light on how that emerged as Omaha poker, or help us form a greater understanding of the history of Omaha poker.  Thus the history of Omaha Poker remains vague, but it is still quite interesting to speculate, which many poker players enjoy doing!
