How to Play Omaha Poker

Omaha poker is one of the most popular variations of Poker amongst players, and is sometimes also known as Omaha High. The game is derived from the Texas Hold’em version of Poker and can be played by 2 to 8 players using a standard 52 card deck. Because there is a high visibility of other cards on the table, the game provides great opportunities for strategic poker playing and even card counting.

The object of the game is to form a poker hand of 5 cards out of an available nine. Two of the Five must be personal, or hidden cards, and the other three must be from the community cards on the table. The Player with the best hand will win the pot.

Step One:
Each player must put their ante into the pot before starting. This is started by the Player on the Dealer’s left putting the maximum low limit amount into the pot. E.g, if the lowest betting limit is $5 and the highest $10, then the player will need to put $5 into the pot. This is known as The Big Blind. The Player to the left of The Big Blind, will then put in half of this amount (e.g. $2.50) and this is known as The Small Blind. Other Players will then put in their antes.

Step Two:
The Dealer will then begin to deal, starting on his left. Each player will receive 4 cards, face down on the table. These cards are “hole” cards and will only be seen by individual players. Two of these cards will be used to make up the player’s final hand. When every player has 4 cards, a round of betting follows.

Step Three:
The Flop: The Dealer will now “burn” the top card on the remaining deck, that is to say, the top card is discarded from play, to prevent cheating. He then deals the next 3 cards face upwards on the centre of the table so that all players can see. Using the cards in their hands and the cards on the table, the players can make an assessment of what their final hands might be, and will then proceed with a round of betting.

During the betting, the players will be able to either call the bets (matching the bet placed), raise the bet (increasing the level of the bet) or fold (withdraw from the game at the cost of their stake).

Step Four:
The Turn: The Dealer once again “burns” the top card from the deck, and deals the next card face up in the centre of the table. There should now be 4 visible cards, or Community cards on the table, in addition to the 4 cards held as “hole” cards by the players. This is followed by another round of betting.

Step Five:
The River: Once all bets have been place, The Dealer “burns” the top card from the deck, and deals the final Community card, face up in the centre of the table. This is also known as The River Card. The remaining players must use 2 cards from the 4 that they hold, plus 3 cards from the Community cards to create a 5 card poker hand.

Step Six:
The player with the best hand will win the pot. On very very rare occasions, the five Community cards on the centre of the table will be better than the combinations held by the players. In this case, the pot will be split amongst the remaining players equally.
