Poker
is an incredibly popular game among gaming circles; it is a card game
based simply of chance and more and more people are beginning to compete
in professional poker championships and tournaments. The origins of poker
have been traced back as far as the very wake of the nineteenth century,
notably around the former French territory on New Orleans in the United
States of America. However initially the game was played using only twenty
cards; it was only in the late 1830s that the fifty-two card game began
to emerge, and this is now the standard for poker nowadays. The basic
principle of poker is the ranking of the cards; The King of any suit as
the highest card and the two card as the lowest. The Ace can be counted
as either the very highest or the very lowest card, but is usually assumes
the highest value. Some variants of poker also include wild cards (usually
the jokers), which can assume any rank desired by the player. It is also
important to remember that in poker all of the card suits (hearts, spades,
diamonds and clubs) are of the same ranking.
Throughout the game the players will all produce
hands of five cards, in the hope of producing the highest
possible hand, and thus win the hand and any money that has been placed
in the pot by the end of that hand. The highest possible hand is only
ever achieved by using a wild card, and this is 'Five-Of-A-Kind'. In this
hand, five identical value cards are collected, and the case of a draw
(ie) two 'Five-Of-A-Kind' hands, the player with the highest value cards
will win that hand.
The highest natural hand (that is, not requiring a wild card) is the 'Straight Flush'. This is made up of five consecutive value cards. For example, a 6-7-8-9-10. A 'Royal Flush' is the highest natural hand possible, and it involves an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten card of the same suit.
The 'Four-Of-A-Kind' hand refers to four cards of the same rank. The 'Full House' hand consists of three of kind, of the same card value and suit and then a separate pair of a same value and suit. A 'Flush' refers to a hand where all cards are of the same suit, but do not have to be in a consecutive order. Next is the 'Straight' hand, which requires five cards of consecutive value but of any suit. 'Three-Of-A-Kind' is a hand of three cards of any rank, but the same suit matched with any other two cards. 'Two-Pair' is constituted of two card pairs and any other fifth card. Finally a 'Pair' is just one pair of cards with any three other cards.
In the case of a tie, say for example two players produce a Straight Flush hand, the card combination which totals the highest value will win that hand. In the case of a Straight Flush, any player producing a Royal Flush, the cards from Ace to Ten will have the highest card combination.
Poker is of course usually played to involve some form of betting between the players, and the bets are won by the player with the highest hand. When the chance to bet reaches a player, they can choose to 'call' that bet- this means that they must contribute money into the pot so that their contribution matches the bet placed by the previous player. They could choose to 'raise', or increase the bet value. However, if they do not feel confident they could 'fold' and not contribute any money into the pot, but also lose any chance of winning the pot.
