How to play Video Poker

Nearly all the video poker machines that are being used today are variations on the five-card draw poker game. Some attempts have been made in order to introduce these machines based on the seven-card stud game, and some machines that are based on the five-card stud are now in use. Although the five-card draw game is a basic game, and the Jacks or better is the poker game for which a lot of the varieties are based.

There is not a dealer's hand or any other player's hand that needs to be beaten; the payoffs are precisely according to the pay table which is noted on the machine and the lowest winning hand is that of a pair of jacks or better (for instance a pair of kings, queens, or aces).

Every machine will show a video screen for which the card images will be dealt. The winnings are normally compiled as credits, for which the player can cash out at any point they want. The credits of the game are also shown on an indicator on the video screen. With a few machines the pay table may also be shown on the screen; whereas with others, it is painted on the front of the machine's glass.

Under the screen is a console which includes a bill validator. The game players will put in their money, and the credits will then show on the screen. Normally, on the left of the machine are the buttons "Cash Out" & "Bet One Credit". On the centre of the machine, there are five buttons, one matching each card dealt, these are marked as "Hold/Cancel"; and to the right of the machine is a button called "Deal/Draw" and then one called "Bet Max."

The game of Video Poker starts when the player presses the buttons to bet and to deal. A lot of the video machines will accept up to around five coins/credits at one time. If the player touches the Bet Max button, the machine will take away five credits and then deal the hand.

After the player has made their bet, five cards will be dealt face up on the video screen. They will have the choice of holding or discarding some or all of their cards. In order to hold their cards, they will just need to push the Hold/Cancel button matching the card that they have chosen. They could press the same button again in order to cancel their hold choice.

After they have made all of their hold decisions, they can press the Deal/Draw button. All of the cards which have not been held will then be removed and some new cards will be shown face up in order to take their place. These remaining five cards will be the final hand. The machine will compare this hand to the pay table. If the hand is the winner, then the matching number of credits will be added to the meter.

The Pay Table

The type of Jacks or Better known as full-pay, which returns 99.5% with the best possible play, is generally called a 9-6 machine, this is taken from the 9-for-1 reimburse for a complete house & 6-for-1 payoff for a flush. The whole table for a 9-6 machine for one coin played returns the following: Pair of jacks or better - 1; two pairs - 2; three of a kind - 3; straight - 4; flush - 6; full house - 9; four of a kind - 25; straight flush - 50; and a royal flush - 250.

Payoffs are comparative to the amount of coins played with one exception. This is that three of a kind will return 3 coins for each coin played, 6 for two, 9 for three, 12 for four and 15 for five. The exclusion will happen on a royal flush. This will pay out 250 coins against one played, 500 for two coins, 750 for three coins, 1,000 for four coins, and then on the fifth coin it will rise to a return of 4,000 coins.

Casinos will normally change the machines' percentage payouts by decreasing the payout amounts on the flush & full house. In a lot of casinos, 8-5 machines, will payout 8-for-1 on a full house and 5-for-1 on a flush. The 7-5 machines are being offered in place of the 9-6 games. With the best play, an 8-5 machine will yield 97.9% and the 7-5 machine will pay out 96.2%.
